Arctic Circle Climbing Guide

The guidebook contains a mix of topos and photo-topos and detailed maps for selected locations in the Norwegian county of Nordland. The region lies partly above the Arctic Circle, meaning that in summer you can climb in the midnight sun. Unlike most UK guidebooks, it also covers a range of climbing styles. English translations are provided for the approach and general information, and although the route descriptions are in Norwegian, Rockfax style symbols, lots of photos and a glossary of common climbing terms make them easy to understand. The guidebook also contains lots of action shots, giving a real feel for the area and its climbing.
The Guidebook was largely produced by Sveinung Råheim, along with members of the Bodø climbing club. I recommend checking out the club's photo gallery for some pretty inspiring rock. Regulars at Alien Rock may know Sveinung and his girlfriend Hanne as they have recently spent time living in Edinburgh and climbing all over Scotland.
The area can be reached with cheap flights to Oslo and then a 1 hour 20 minute connection to Bodø. It is also possible to travel by ferry from Newcastle to either Stavanger or Bergen. A climbing trip to Nordland can be easily combined with a trip with the Lofoten islands (3 hours away by boat) or the famous Granite peaks in Tysfjord (Stetind etc, see free Rockfax miniguide).
