Ally Swinton in hard Jorasses ascent

21yr old Fife climber Ally Swinton on 5th-6th September climbed the East Face of the Grandes Jorasses (Gervasutti route) with Spaniard, Oscar Lopez, in a 31hr push. This is probably the third British ascent of this route. Others were Tasker/Renshaw 1974 and Simon Richardson/ Kekus 1982.

It combines complex route finding, serious objective danger and sustained technical difficulty in a very remote setting. To quote Simon Richardson in Climber 1995 “Even today Gervasutti’s greatest climb has few parallels for commitment and seriousness within the Mont Blanc range.” They agree with this, after having slight problems in the summit overhangs.

Good training for Alien Rock boulder comps this year?
