Stephen Venables 'Higher than the Eagle Soars' Thursday 5th February 7.30 pm The Glasgow Academy, Colebrooke Street, Glasgow G12 8HE

Stephen was the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen. He reached the summit alone, after climbing with a small American-Canadian team, by a new route up the gigantic Kangshung Face. This lecture takes the title of his autobiography and will explore how and, more importantly, why he became a mountaineer. Starting from childhood, he will describe many adventures, including early alpine climbs, winter Scottish journeys, Afghanistan before the Russian invasion, the North Face of the Eiger, a fantastic journey through the heart of the Karakoram mountains as well as his ascent of Everest.
