Now on the front page!

OK, I got off my arse and put videos on the front page!

Think this should work - although can people let me know if the formatting looks funny.

I also did a bit of tidying up behind the scenes which basically involved moving the stuff from say 'Bouldering Videos' to the media tab on the boulding page.

For those of you who haven't noticed, every page now has a media tab for adding photos and videos, e.g. Cullen Caves, with media tab SCMedia:Cullen Caves, and also discussion page Talk:Cullen Caves.

SusanG11:36, 7 July 2010

For Info - I'll try and change the video, once a week (probably friday), and i'll look at the videos page first for inspiration, then whatever else is new on SC, the wider world. (or just stuff i like the song on)

SusanG11:04, 11 July 2010

Island video is great.

ColinMoody15:31, 17 July 2010

Similar idea but with pictures would be good!

Video Policy

Just wondering if we need a video policy?

eg - don't put videos in guides - people might not want the beta, or if theres about 20 different vids of problems it could make pages really long - a pain if printing out)

versus

do put videos into guides as it makes them richer and more interactive - and gives a good flavour of what the climber can expect if they head to this venue

I suspect what we want is somthing like use video sensibly in guides (or use the discussion page - the bit at the top)

Susan Guest08:08, 19 April 2010

I would really like to see videos in the guides (and on all the other pages, where they would make sense). I guess I don't really see them being any different to photos and if people don't want the beta they can always not play them!

I agree though that 25 videos would probably make most guide pages really nippy. Perhaps we could stick to a couple of choice videos for a page, but also create a separate videos page if there are lots of videos for a certain guide. Something like this one for Dumby. Susan (and other wiki geeks) - do you think that Dumbarton_Rock/Videos is the best way to do this type of thing? Or would it be better to create a Videos namespace (Videos:Dumbarton_Rock)?

I have been thinking about this - I don't suppose there is anyway to add another tab to pages is there? I was thinking that if each page had 3 tabs

  • article (guide)
  • talk
  • media

I'm not even sure it's technically possible...

Susan Guest13:22, 4 May 2010

I saw you put some vids at the top of discussion pages Susan... Maybe it would be better to have a discussion topic called "videos" and put them in that topic? e.g.

I agree a new tab for videos/images would be nice.

Michael Lee16:51, 4 May 2010

Susan - that's a great idea! I'll look at doing exactly that. It'll very likely just be a link to Media:Name_of_page.

Mark Somerville13:20, 6 May 2010

I've added a 'media' tab - have fun folks!

I don't have an issue with video in guides as long as its only one or two really good ones, it's not really that different from how we use photos. For this I definately like to see a far smaller player size though.

Mark: Can the YouTube widget support width/height attributes as the Vimeo one does?

I guess we should get to work on a video policy page and a video tutorial. I can start the tutorial once we've decided on a format by the end of this week.

Mark: Can the YouTube widget support width/height attributes as the Vimeo one does?

It can now!

Mark Somerville10:24, 19 April 2010

Sweet!!!

Dredpath12:07, 19 April 2010

My preference would be to have the videos on a seperate page to the topo. Leave the topo for route info, and have a nieghbouring media page with action photos and videos. Add to that a discussion page and we're in business.

Michael Lee14:19, 19 April 2010

We seemed to be getting information duplication and divergence so i have tided them in to 2 places

1. A help page (Help:Videos) - which will be a how to guide. I moved some stuff to here so it's all under the HELP space - and navigable to from the help menu This needs adding to when we get chance

2. A policy page(SCWiki:Video guidelines). I moved it to the SCWiki namespace so it's under the same zone as our SCWiki:Privacy policy

Getting a frame from videos

It would be nice to be able to get a single frame from the videos we post, so that we can display that frame on the main page when things like a news article has an associated video. I'll try to look into how.

Mark Somerville13:26, 29 April 2010

New video page

What do folk think about getting some vimeo links up here - I really like how Johnny has done it on Dumbie.info?

I remember having a convesation in the past along the lines of "Oh the quality is crap we don't want that" - but this doesn't seem to have hindered utube and vimeos world domination.

Dredpath13:42, 2 April 2010

Being able to embed vimeo's and youtube's would be great i think.

Michael Lee17:17, 2 April 2010

Any updates on this?

Michael Lee21:43, 16 April 2010

I've had a look at the various video options today. I think I'm going to look into installing the Widgets extension. This will hopefully allow us a fairly consistent way to embed video from various sources as well as being able to do some other cool stuff using the same wikitext syntax.

Hopefully there will be more on this soon.

Mark Somerville10:38, 18 April 2010

Great idea. The quality of content and vids will improve as peeps use it more. Do we just embed it from source?

markmcgowan0119:54, 2 April 2010

Dredpath said:

"Once we get the wikimedia extension installed form vimeo/utube its as simple as embedding a link - something like [#vimeo linkscr], then the usual player window should appear the same as those that folk are used to using in blogs, facebook etc. You would load your video up on once of those sites then link it in here."

Mark Somerville17:25, 17 April 2010

ok I think that seems to work...

Do we want a videos page (good for seeing recent videos) or put them up on the relevant wikipage somewhere (good for searching)? Ideally have a page for the 5 most recent videos, then transfer them to wikipage? Maybe also have a page for most popular videos???

Is it possible to have a pictures and videos tab on each wiki page?

Michael Lee13:59, 18 April 2010

I can't find and easy way to get a break between each video - any suggestions?

Michael Lee14:12, 18 April 2010

See here we can play around with some different formats and decide on what features we want before we start properly!

The video sizes can be made smaller for the vimeo extension, but no the utube ones!

Mike Lee - do you have any objection to us just using vimeo to keep all the video the same???

Dredpath18:13, 18 April 2010

OK, I'm now happy with the main video page, I think keeping it simple row by row is the easiest way. Messing around with multi vids per row introduced too many error - and I'm not very good with div layouts - still whats there is better that mediawiki tables!!!

What do folk think????????????

Dredpath23:58, 19 April 2010

looks superb!:-)

Mark McGowan00:22, 20 April 2010

Nice format, Dave. However, it doesn't work too well on wide resolutions - the details and videos are too far apart on 1920 wide browsers. I'm not sure what we should do about that. Perhaps a max-width setting (I'm not sure if that will work in IE - it certainly doesn't work in IE6). I'll try to have a look at that soon.

Also, we should be able to reduce the amount of code using CSS classes once we actually get the format nailed down.

Mark Somerville10:24, 20 April 2010

Feel free to modify away folks, I'm afraid I'm done with it - too many late nights :(

Dredpath15:11, 20 April 2010

If that's not it working now then I'm done with it too.

Michael Lee18:23, 20 April 2010

I've put up another format. This will likely not work very well in Internet Explorer just now - check it out in something that isn't broken and if we like the format, I should be able to sort it out for IE too.

I've slimmed down the amount of markup and made it all a bit more wiki-like to write. Check it out and feel free to dissect!

Mark Somerville23:29, 20 April 2010

Marks LEET skills have fixed made it look much better now, nice one man, I'm happy with that format!

Dredpath23:27, 20 April 2010

Hey I like that format. One small point is that when you click edit on the video title, you start editing half way through that videos code and get a bit of the next video, if you see what I mean...

Michael Lee23:41, 20 April 2010

Yea, I noticed it too because the wiki breaks the subsection there's no way off keeping the div encapsulated :( I've found it better to edit the whole page for format, then use the subsection edit buttons for adjusting text.

Dredpath23:46, 20 April 2010

looks OK in IE (we have at work). The text sits below the video and bother are on the left - but it looks clean and the shaded box keeps it encapusualted.

I'm assuming the way we are talkig about is the way here: New Dumbie Linkups from Malc

Susan Guest11:39, 21 April 2010

Cool cool, that's good to know (and saves me checking!).

All: let me know if you spot anything strange going on with the rendering, please!
